New to yoga or first time practicing with URBΔN ŌM?
Be sure to check our ‘How To Join‘ and ‘Contact Us‘ pages.
It’s normal to have questions about what you’re getting into, including what to wear, what to bring to class, and how to prepare yourself.
Knowing what’s expected and what works ahead of time will help you to feel more comfortable.
New students are encouraged to work at their own pace and take breaks as needed. All work, small or large, will help build strength, flexibility, concentration and endurance.
Here’s what you should know before you move and rest with us…
-
We are a cashless studio: classes are pre-booked online, and studio mat rentals or water purchases are made by card or via account payments.
-
Our studio opens 15 minutes before class start time.
-
Our facilities feature: coat racks, lockers with key access (no cash needed), one shower, one changing room, a vanity area, and a separate toilet room.
-
Shoes: Yoga at URBΔN ŌM is done barefoot. Shoes are kept at the door. If you feel uncomfortable being barefoot, wear yoga socks. These special socks have non-slip grips on the bottom that “grab” the mat and prevent your feet from slipping around and keep your feet covered.
-
Trousers: Comfortable exercise bottoms, shorts or leggings will do. Avoid trousers that don’t stretch, like jeans.
-
Tops: A top that is fitted works best for yoga. Large or loose-fitting t- shirts can slide down during movement, unless you’re coming to a relaxation class. For high-energy and fast-paced classes, we recommend fitted and supportive sports tops.
-
Hot yoga gear: Due to the heat, cotton apparel and loose-fitting clothing aren’t ideal, as they trap sweat and hold your heat close to your body. Look for moisture-wicking apparel to facilitate your practice.
-
Mat: Bring your yoga mat. If you’re headed to your very first class, we supply your first mat rental for free. Thereafter, we have mats available for rent or purchase. If you’re joining us for one of our virtual classes, you can buy a mat from local retailers or online.
-
Water bottle: Keep hydrated and make sure you bring water with you. We also have water to purchase at our studio.
-
Towel: If you’re trying out our hot or heated yoga classes, bring a hand towel. If you plan to shower after, bring a bath towel. We also have bath-sized towels for purchase at the front desk.
-
Props: No need to bring your own yoga props, but you can if you prefer to. We have a full selection of specific props such as blocks, bolsters, blankets, and straps to use.
If you’re new, it’s always a good idea to get to class a little early to help acclimate yourself to the environment and introduce yourself to the teacher.
- Avoid heavy meals prior to class
- Speak with your teacher before or after class, we are here to help!
- Use the studio to relax if you’re early
Let common courtesy be your guide as you practice:
-
Silence your phone.
-
Arrive on time.
-
Respect others mats space – and negotiate space when needed.
-
Keep studio doors or curtains closed behind you, especially for the hot classes.
-
Don’t leave class early. If you need to leave the studio room for an emergency, signal to your teacher.
First practices can feel like a lot: Remember to keep breathing, stay focused on yourself, and try to enjoy the practice! The practice begins to make more sense in time, and we are here to support you in finding the right class for you.
